Wärtsilä has signed a five-year decarbonisation services agreement with Aqualectra, Curaçao’s energy utility, aiming to accelerate the island’s renewable energy transition.
This innovative deal ties Wärtsilä’s payments directly to performance metrics—specifically its success in reducing CO₂ intensity, increasing renewable energy use, cutting costs, and improving energy reliability.
The partnership supports Curaçao’s goal of increasing its renewable energy share from 30% to 50% by 2025 and to 70% by 2027. To achieve this, Wärtsilä will deploy a range of technologies, including a new 38.4 MW grid-balancing power plant, a 25 MW / 45 MWh energy storage system, and its GEMS Digital Energy Platform. These tools will help integrate and optimize both existing and future renewable and conventional energy sources.
Wärtsilä’s President of Energy, Anders Lindberg, described the agreement as a model for strategic decarbonisation in small grids. The company’s technology and planning expertise will help reduce environmental impact while also lowering electricity tariffs for residents. By enhancing grid flexibility and reliability, the collaboration positions Curaçao as a leader among island nations seeking sustainable and resilient energy solutions.
This initiative also reflects Wärtsilä’s broader strategy to support microgrids and isolated power systems—such as island nations and industrial sectors like mining—in achieving decarbonisation goals through comprehensive system planning and technology integration.
