Work Commences on 120-MW Sonnedix Solar Project in England

Global independent solar power producer Sonnedix Power Holdings Ltd has started building a 120-MW solar farm complex in County Durham, England, the company said on Thursday.

The project, named Cowley Complex, will create three connected solar farms of 60 MW, 43 MW and 17 MW, capable of generating approximately 124.6 GWh of electricity per year. It will be largest solar plant in Sonnedix’s 300-MW portfolio in the UK.

Ameresco Sunel Energy Ltd has been appointed as the EPC contractor on the project.

Sonnedix is financing Cowley with funds drawn from its EUR-500-million (USD 536.3m) loan facility it closed in December 2023 to bankroll its projects in the UK and Europe.

Cowley will generate revenues under the UK government’s contract-for-difference (CfD) scheme, being fully contracted along with the rest of the firm’s UK portfolio.

Sonnedix expects the project to be completed in the third quarter of 2025. The CfD scheme will kick in some time in 2026.
