A new 25 MW solar farm has been inaugurated in Kerman Province, covering 42 hectares. This facility is designed to address electricity imbalances and is expected to play a crucial role in improving the country’s energy stability.
Looking ahead, Iran is exploring plans to establish a 100 MW solar power plant to further enhance sustainable energy and improve living standards. In addition to this, five solar parks are currently under construction across the country, with 17 parks approved for development in six provinces, including Qazvin and Kerman.
The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organization (SATBA), in collaboration with the Iran Small Industries and Industrial Parks Organization (ISIPO), is overseeing these projects. The government’s commitment to expanding solar infrastructure is evident from the recent progress reports.
In June, Iranian renewable power plants generated 261 million kWh of electricity, marking a 9% increase from the previous month. The country's renewable capacity is set to grow significantly, with 600 new power plants under construction, targeting a total capacity of 13,500 MW. This expansion is expected to boost the share of renewables in Iran’s electricity generation to over 15% in the next two years.
Currently, renewables account for about 7% of Iran's total electricity capacity. Of this, solar power contributes 44%, while wind farms provide 40%, and small-scale hydropower plants account for 13%. The government's efforts include diversifying financing models, increasing guaranteed electricity purchase prices, and enhancing the trading and export of renewable energy.
In January 2022, the Energy Ministry and private contractors signed memorandums of understanding to advance the construction of new renewable power plants, underscoring the commitment to accelerating the growth of renewable energy in the country.
