500MW green hydrogen plant plans for Port of Amsterdam unveiled




The Port of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, is set to gain a 500MW green hydrogen plant in a step towards the region’s hydrogen economy, in an attempt to decarbonise mobility and industry.


Hydrogen Chemistry Company (HyCC) yesterday (July 13) launched the Project H2era which will see the company construct the plant in the Amsterdam port area, which it anticipates could be operational in 2027.


HyCC has said in cooperation with the Port of Amsterdam, it has completed a first feasibility study, with plans to deepen the project’s developments in the company months with a pre-front end engineering design (FEED) study.


With a view to initially offer hydrogen to decarbonise industry and mobility in the region, the plant will also be able to be connected to a national pipeline network which could enable hydrogen exchange between industrial clusters, the company said.


In June (2022), the Dutch Government revealed plans to construct a national hydrogen network for hydrogen transmission.


Marcel Galjee, Managing Director of HyCC, said, “The use of green hydrogen is crucial to reduce emissions from industries such as steel, chemicals and aviation.


“With the H2era project, we can produce an important part of the hydrogen locally and lay the foundation for a sustainable hydrogen economy in the Amsterdam region.”


Dorine Bosman, Chief Investment Officer for the Port of Amsterdam, commented, “500MW of green hydrogen production is an enormous asset for the regional hydrogen economy. With this project, the Port of Amsterdam strengthens its position as a frontrunner in the transition to a sustainable, circular economy.”


In December (2021), it was announced that HyCC was set to be launched, with plans to target aviation, steel, chemicals and refineries, with reliable and affordable green hydrogen solutions, and is currently working with Port of Amsterdam and Tata Steel on a 100MW plant at Tata Steel’s Ijmuiden site.
