Arizona Public Service (APS) has announced plans to add nearly 7,300 MW of new energy capacity to its mix, marking its largest-ever expansion of power sources. This will include renewable energy, battery storage, and natural gas, aimed at meeting growing energy demand in Arizona. The new supply will be enough to power nearly 1.4 million air conditioners simultaneously.
Key highlights of this expansion:
Solar Power: APS will develop the Ironwood Solar Plant (170 MW) and expand its solar capacity by contracting 2,480 MW through power purchase agreements.
Battery Energy Storage: APS will pair 150 MW of battery storage with the Agave Solar Plant, enhancing energy delivery after sunset. Additional storage agreements will capture up to 3,460 MW for peak demand hours.
Wind Power: APS has secured 500 MW from wind projects in northern Arizona.
Natural Gas: APS is expanding its natural gas plants, including adding 90 MW at the Sundance Power Plant and 400 MW at the Redhawk Power Plant, ensuring reliable power during extreme demand periods.
By 2038, APS anticipates a 60% growth in peak demand, reaching 13,000 MW, and is already preparing for this through a 2024 ASRFP. This expansion is part of APS's broader goal to reach 100% clean energy by 2050.
APS's current energy mix is 51% clean, with its portfolio including substantial solar and wind assets. APS serves approximately 1.4 million customers across Arizona and is committed to delivering reliable, clean, and affordable energy.
