The government of Benin has announced the commencement of construction on the Forsun PV power plant, a 25 MW solar project that will increase the total capacity of the Illoulofin Solar Power Station from 50 MW to 75 MW. The expansion involves three solar arrays and represents a significant step in the country's transition to clean energy.

Located in the Illoulofin area of Pobè in the Plateau department, the Forsun project highlights Benin's commitment to diversifying its energy mix with renewable sources. “With these advancements, Benin is progressing toward sustainable energy independence, integrating innovation, economic growth, and environmental stewardship,” said the government in a statement. “The Illoulofin power plants stand as a testament to this ambition and will contribute to providing electricity to thousands of households.”

The Illoulofin site’s development has been a phased effort. Defisol, the initial 25 MW solar plant, was completed in 2022. Meanwhile, Toyota Tsusho Corporation is nearing the completion of the second 25 MW facility, TTC, which is expected to become operational shortly. Once Forsun is finalized, the cumulative capacity will reach 75 MWp.

This latest project is supported by a collaboration between the Beninese government, the French Development Agency (AFD), and the European Union, with a total investment of nearly XOF 16 billion ($25.8 million). By enriching its energy infrastructure with clean power, Benin aims to align with its sustainable development goals and set a milestone in its energy history.
