Malaysia | Blueleaf Energy & Universal Peak Secure Financing for 100MW/400MWh BESS

Malaysia's grid-scale battery storage market has taken another important step forward.

Blueleaf Energy and Universal Peak have closed financing for a 100MW/400MWh BESS project, one of four projects selected under Malaysia's inaugural MyBeST solicitation.

The project is now targeting commercial operation in mid-2027, with financing provided by UOB. Financial terms were not disclosed.

🔋 What makes this significant?

The MyBeST tender, launched by Malaysia's Energy Commission in November 2024, selected four projects totaling:

400 MW / 1.6 GWh

The projects are being developed under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model, creating a long-term commercial framework for utility-scale energy storage in Peninsular Malaysia.

For the Blueleaf Energy–Universal Peak project, the commercial structure has already moved beyond the tender stage.

In June, their joint venture BKHM BESS signed both a Battery Energy Storage System Service Agreement and a Connection Agreement with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

The service agreement establishes the commercial framework with TNB's Single Buyer, including capacity and performance obligations, while the connection agreement defines the technical requirements for connecting the BESS to the grid.

This progression is important:

Policy → Tender → Project Award → Grid Agreement → Financing → Construction → Operation

Malaysia is also rapidly building a broader ecosystem around energy storage.

In May, TNB inaugurated the 100MW/400MWh Santong BESS, equipped with grid-forming inverters to support grid stability.

Meanwhile, the government has launched the next major phase of its solar-plus-storage strategy, targeting 2.5GW of solar PV paired with 1.25GW of BESS under the latest Large Scale Solar programme.

Together, these developments suggest that Malaysia's BESS market is moving beyond early-stage demonstrations toward large-scale deployment backed by structured commercial arrangements and project financing.

For developers and investors, the key question is increasingly no longer whether Malaysia needs grid-scale storage, but how quickly BESS projects can move from awarded capacity to construction and operation.

The broader market direction is becoming increasingly clear:

☀️ Solar expansion↓🔋 BESS deployment↓⚡ Grid flexibility & stability↓💰 Bankable long-term storage projects

As Malaysia increases renewable energy penetration, BESS is likely to become an increasingly important part of the country's power system and energy transition strategy.
