Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL, SHE: 300750) has launched its new energy storage system Tianheng to further tap the energy storage market.
The company rolled out Tianheng at an event on April 9, saying it is the world's first mass-producible energy storage system with 0 degradation for 5 years. Tianheng is a standard 20-foot containerized energy storage system equipped with CATL's energy storage-specific L-series long-life lithium iron phosphate cells.
World's First 5-Year Zero Degradation System, Mass-Producible
The milestone of 5-year zero degradation in capacity marks a significant achievement for long-life lithium batteries. However, for energy storage stations dedicated to meeting the demands of new power systems, zero degradation in power output is equally crucial. The Tianheng Energy Storage System employs biomimetic SEI (Solid Electrolyte Interphase) and self-assembly electrolyte technologies to clear obstacles for lithium-ion batteries, achieving zero degradation in both power and capacity over 5 years. The auxiliary power consumption remains controlled throughout the lifecycle without escalation, achieving true "freeze-frame" from within.
With cutting-edge R&D capabilities and advanced manufacturing prowess, CATL has successfully addressed the challenges posed by highly reactive lithium metal in "zero degradation" batteries. This has effectively mitigated thermal runaway caused by oxidation reactions, enabling the mass production of 5-year zero degradation systems.
Compact 6.25MWh in a 20ft Containe
The Tianheng Energy Storage System achieves a high energy capacity of 6.25 megawatt-hours within a standard 20-foot shipping container, boasting a 30% increase in energy density per unit area and reducing the station's footprint by 20%. This upgrade in energy density within a limited space results in higher efficiency gains. Starting from its core, the Tianheng Energy Storage System is equipped with specialized torage-specific L-series long-life lithium iron phosphate cells, achieving an ultra-high energy density of 430Wh/L in lithium iron phosphate energy storage batteries.
Energy Storage-Quality Management for Ultimate Safety
To achieve the ultimate goal of extreme safety in energy storage, CATL has established a specialized quality management system based on a complete cycle of technological development, testing and validation, operational monitoring, and safety failure analysis. This system sets different safety objectives based on application scenarios and develops corresponding safety technologies accordingly. To ensure the effectiveness of these technologies, CATL has constructed a safety verification platform to simulate the safety verification of energy storage systems in various grid scenarios and operating environments. After project commissioning, CATL continuously monitors operational status through AI risk monitoring and intelligent warning systems, utilizing PSA (Probabilistic Safety Assessment) models to quantify the failure probability of energy storage products throughout their lifecycle. This approach verifies safety design objectives and ensures continuous updates.
The individual cell failure rate of the Tianheng Energy Storage System has achieved an industry-leading level of parts per billion (PPB), extending throughout the entire lifecycle and supply chain operation. This capability effectively reduces operational costs and significantly enhances the lifetime Internal Rate of Return (IRR).
Energy storage is a crucial component of energy transformation and power transition. CATL has consistently strived to provide top-tier energy storage solutions globally. The introduction of the Tianheng Energy Storage System signifies another milestone in CATL's efforts to facilitate energy transition. In the future, CATL will continue to uphold the concept of open innovation and collaborate sincerely with global industry partners to achieve mutual success. Through innovation, CATL aims to drive high-quality development in the industry and utilize technology to build a carbon-neutral society and lifestyle.
