Chilean developer updates 200 MW/1,000 MWh battery storage project

Plus Energía has submitted updated plans for a 200 MW/1,000 MWh battery energy storage project in Chile’s Coquimbo region, increasing the number of battery containers and inverters while maintaining a planned $350 million investment.
Plus Energía has submitted updated environmental documents for its proposed 200 MW/1,000 MWh Camarones battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Chile’s Coquimbo region.
The revised design increases the project to 315 containerized lithium-ion battery units and 109 DC/AC inverters rated at 4.6 MW each, up from 247 battery units and 103 inverters in the version submitted in 2024. The project retains its planned investment of $350 million.
The five-hour battery system will charge from Chile’s National Electric System (SEN) and discharge electricity during periods of high demand. The project will also include 33 kV and 220 kV substations, a 220 kV transmission connection, and related grid infrastructure.
The facility will occupy 13.57 hectares near Route 5 Norte in the Coquimbo region. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2027, with a projected operating life of 30 years.
The project has remained under environmental review since 2025. Chile’s Environmental Assessment Service (SEA) requested additional information last year covering project design, scheduling, waste management, waterways, noise, wildlife, community impacts and sectoral environmental permits.
The updated filing allows members of the public to request a formal public participation process within 10 days of publication in Chile’s Official Gazette.
