Europe | HELLENiQ ENERGY Brings 100 MW / 200 MWh Battery Storage Project Online in Greece

October 8, 2026-HELLENiQ Renewables, a subsidiary of HELLENiQ ENERGY, has completed its first battery energy storage system (BESS) at the company’s industrial facilities in Thessaloniki, Greece. The project has an installed power capacity of 100 MW and an energy storage capacity of 200 MWh, representing an investment of approximately €50 million.

The facility is designed to provide flexibility and balancing services to Greece’s national electricity transmission system. By storing surplus renewable electricity and releasing it when demand is higher, the project can help reduce renewable energy curtailment and improve grid reliability.
The installation comprises three battery storage systems using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology with liquid cooling. Grid connection infrastructure includes a new 33/150 kV step-up substation and an approximately five-kilometre underground high-voltage transmission line.
The project was selected through Greece’s first competitive tender for energy storage systems and implemented under the national recovery plan, Greece 2.0, with support from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU programme.
HELLENiQ ENERGY is also developing a second storage project in Florina, with a planned capacity of 50 MW / 200 MWh. The developments reflect the company’s broader strategy to expand its renewable energy and storage portfolio across Southeast Europe.
