Climate Risk Becomes a Daily Operational Challenge for BESS Developers in Southeast Asia

July 7, 2026 — Climate-related risks are increasingly becoming a day-to-day operational consideration for battery energy storage system (BESS) developers across Southeast Asia, as extreme heat, flooding, typhoons and high humidity create new challenges for project development and long-term operations.
Industry experts speaking at Energy Storage Summit Asia 2026 highlighted that climate risks need to be considered throughout the entire BESS project lifecycle, from site selection and project design to equipment procurement, construction and operations.
Extreme temperatures can accelerate battery degradation and affect system performance, potentially increasing replacement and maintenance costs over the project’s lifetime. Developers are therefore placing greater emphasis on thermal management systems and equipment specifications that can withstand challenging local conditions.
In markets exposed to severe weather, including the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, project developers are also incorporating climate resilience into early-stage planning. This includes assessing flood risks, strengthening infrastructure against extreme weather and integrating climate-related risks into environmental assessments and project financing considerations.
As Southeast Asia continues to expand its solar and energy storage capacity, climate resilience is expected to become an increasingly important factor in the design, bankability and long-term performance of BESS projects.
