EDP completes Spanish hybrid renewable project with battery storage

EDP has commissioned a 36 MW/72 MWh battery energy storage system at its Las Lomillas site in Spain, completing the integration of wind, solar and battery storage behind a single grid connection.
EDP has commissioned the battery energy storage system at its Las Lomillas hybrid renewable energy project in Spain, completing the site’s transition to an integrated wind, solar and storage facility.
The project in Cuenca combines a 49.5 MW wind farm, a 36 MW solar plant commissioned in 2025, and a 36 MW/72 MWh battery energy storage system behind a single 122 MW grid connection using infrastructure originally designed for about 50 MW of export capacity.
The battery system comprises 24 containerized units rated at 1.5 MW each and is controlled through an energy management system that optimizes the operation of the wind, solar and storage assets under the supervision of EDP’s energy management and control center.
The battery project received up to €6.2 million ($7.13 million) in funding through Spain’s Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE) program for innovative renewable energy storage projects under the European Union’s NextGenerationEU recovery plan.
With the completion of Las Lomillas, EDP said it now has more than 260 MW of hybrid renewable capacity in Spain. Across the Iberian Peninsula, the company operates almost 700 MW of hybrid projects in Portugal, bringing its combined hybrid portfolio to about 1 GW.
