Elawan, CFE sign deal for 98 MW solar-plus-storage project in Mexico

Elawan Energy and Mexico’s state-owned utility CFE have signed a joint investment agreement for a 98.43 MWp solar project with a 72 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).

Elawan Energy has signed a joint investment agreement with Mexico’s state-owned utility Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) to develop the San Pedro solar project in the municipality of Huimilpan, Querétaro.

The agreement includes a power purchase agreement and a separate contract covering services provided by the battery energy storage system.

The project will have an interconnection capacity of 98.2 MW and include a 72 MWh battery energy storage system. Elawan did not disclose the battery’s power rating or discharge duration.

The company estimates the solar plant will generate about 280 GWh of renewable electricity per year, equivalent to the annual consumption of more than 85,000 households.

“The signing of this contract marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration with CFE and represents a decisive step in our commitment to Mexico,” said Alfonso Fernández Valera, Elawan Energy’s country manager for Mexico.

He said combining solar generation with battery storage will provide energy, flexibility, and backup capacity to the Mexican electricity system.

The project will be developed under a joint investment model between CFE and Elawan Energy. The company did not disclose the planned investment, construction timeline, or expected commercial operation date.

Elawan submitted the San Pedro project for environmental review with Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) in April. The application proposed 140,616 bifacial solar modules and estimated investment costs of MXN 1.115 billion.

Elawan Energy operates in 14 countries with 2.4 GW of installed capacity, 0.7 GW under construction, and more than 12.5 GW of projects in various stages of development.
