Spain-based Zelestra and Germany’s EnBW have signed a long-term tolling agreement covering 300 MW/1.2 GWh of battery energy storage capacity at Zelestra’s planned 500 MW/2 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region.
Under the agreement, Zelestra will build the project while EnBW will secure the agreed share of its storage capacity through the tolling arrangement.
With the signing of the agreement, the entire 2 GWh battery storage project is now fully contracted, following a similar tolling agreement signed with Swiss utility BKW in September 2025.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the project expected to enter full commercial operation in 2028.
In Italy, Zelestra aims to double its current 1.4 GW pipeline of solar and battery storage projects in 2026. In December 2025, the company secured contracts for nine projects under Italy’s FerX auctions, enabling the development of up to 168 MW of new solar capacity.
