Energy Storage Emerges as a Key to Vietnam’s Rooftop Solar Growth

Vietnam’s rooftop solar market is gaining momentum, with battery energy storage systems (BESS) increasingly viewed as an important component in improving the efficiency and flexibility of solar power generation.
As of August 2026, Vietnam had more than 11,450 MWp of self-consumption rooftop solar capacity, highlighting the country’s substantial progress in distributed solar deployment. However, the adoption of battery storage alongside rooftop installations remains limited, leaving significant room for further market development.
Integrating energy storage with rooftop solar systems can help households and businesses make better use of electricity generated during daylight hours, reduce reliance on grid power during peak-demand periods, and improve energy resilience. For commercial and industrial users, the combination can also support energy cost management and more flexible electricity consumption.
Despite these potential benefits, wider adoption of rooftop solar-plus-storage systems faces several challenges, including high upfront investment costs, access to financing, safety standards, and regulatory requirements. Clearer market rules and more attractive project economics will be important in encouraging consumers and businesses to invest in integrated solar and storage solutions.
As Vietnam continues to expand its distributed renewable energy capacity, the development of effective policies, financing mechanisms, and business models could play a decisive role in accelerating battery storage deployment.
The growing intersection of rooftop solar and energy storage presents opportunities for solar developers, battery manufacturers, system integrators, and energy service providers seeking to participate in Vietnam’s evolving clean energy market.
