ENGIE Chile's BESS Tamaya, located in Tocopilla, Antofagasta, has received approval from the National Electric Coordinator (CEN) to begin commercial operation.
This marks a key milestone in the company’s transformation strategy, repurposing a site that previously hosted a diesel power plant. Now, it houses the Tamaya Solar Plant (114 MWac) and BESS Tamaya (68 MW/418 MWh), storing solar energy to supply the National Electric System during peak demand.
CEO Rosaline Corinthien emphasized, "BESS Tamaya accelerates the energy transition, while contributing to local development by giving the site a second life."
The project, which came online one month ahead of schedule, is expected to cut 42,187 tons of CO2 annually—equivalent to removing around 14,500 combustion vehicles from the road—and provide clean energy to 50,800 homes during peak hours.
ENGIE Chile is also advancing other energy storage projects: BESS Tocopilla (116 MW/660 MWh) and BESS Capricornio (48 MW/264 MWh). Once fully operational, ENGIE Chile's energy storage capacity will reach 2 GWh.
"We continue to drive toward a cleaner, sustainable future with innovative energy solutions like storage," Corinthien added.
