Engie kicks off construction of 75-MW solar farm in S Africa

French power utility Engie SA (EPA:ENGI) has started construction of the 75-MW Grootspruit solar farm in the Free State province, South Africa, the company announced on Monday.

Aurex Constructors and Ablon Construction have been appointed as the preferred contractors on this project.

Grootspruit is one of two solar projects that Engie will build and operate in partnership with South African independent power producer (IPP) Pele Green Energy. The other solar farm is Graspan, also of 75 MW, located in the Northern Cape.

Both Grootspruit and Graspan are Bid Window Five projects, selected under South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).

Commissioning of the plants is expected to take place by the end of 2025.
