Engie to Provide Carrefour Spain with 180 GWh of Renewable Energy Annually
Engie has signed a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Carrefour, a leading retail chain in Spain, to supply 180 GWh of renewable energy per year. The energy will come from four of Engie’s renewable facilities, including two wind farms and two large-scale solar photovoltaic plants.
Montel, a firm that conducts energy market studies and provides price estimates, has assessed various 10-year solar and wind PPAs and found recently negotiated prices around €60 per MWh. Engie did not comment on these figures.
The energy supply is expected to begin in 2026 and will be integrated into Carrefour’s strategic plan for that year. This new PPA, combined with Carrefour’s existing solar self-consumption systems, is anticipated to meet approximately 40% of the group's annual electricity needs.
In Spain, Carrefour operates 204 hypermarkets, 162 supermarkets, 1,079 Carrefour Express stores, and 64 Supeco outlets. The retailer also reports having over 280,000 square meters of solar panels installed across 137 of its stores.
