Europe Adds 8.8 GW of Wind Capacity in H1 2026, Putting 2026 on Track for a Record Year

Europe added 8.8 GW of new wind power capacity during the first half of 2026, representing an approximately 30% increase year-on-year, according to WindEurope. The new capacity included 6.5 GW of onshore wind and 2.3 GW of offshore wind.

Germany led Europe in new wind installations, adding 3.4 GW of capacity during the first six months of the year. The United Kingdom and Spain followed, reflecting continued investment in wind power across Europe's major renewable energy markets.

European governments also continued to support new wind projects through competitive auctions. A total of 17.2 GW of wind capacity received support through auctions in H1 2026, while more than 24 GW of additional projects are expected to be tendered during the second half of the year.

WindEurope said Europe is on track to achieve record wind installations in 2026. However, challenges related to grid connections, permitting procedures and investment conditions remain important factors that could affect the pace of future development.

The continued growth of both onshore and offshore wind highlights Europe's efforts to expand renewable generation, strengthen energy security and accelerate the transition toward a low-carbon power system.
