Europe adds 8.8 GW wind capacity in first half

Europe installed 8.8 GW of new wind power capacity in the first half of 2026, nearly one-third more than during the same period last year, as Germany led growth and offshore wind connections accelerated, industry association WindEurope said on Tuesday.

Wind power capacity across Europe has doubled over the past decade as governments continue to expand renewable energy generation. By the end of June 2026, Europe’s total installed wind capacity had reached 311 GW.

Germany remained the largest contributor to new installations, accounting for 39% of Europe’s newly added wind capacity during the first six months of the year. The strong performance highlights Germany’s continued role in driving the expansion of Europe’s renewable energy sector.

Offshore wind also recorded significant growth. Europe connected 2.1 GW of new offshore wind capacity to the grid between January and June 2026, approximately three times the capacity added during the same period last year.

WindEurope said the sector’s continued growth will depend on government decisions over the coming months, particularly regarding permitting, renewable energy auctions, grid infrastructure and electrification.

“Government decisions on permitting, auctions, grids and electrification in the coming months will make or break this momentum,” WindEurope CEO Tinne Van der Straeten said.

The latest figures underscore the continued expansion of wind power as Europe accelerates its transition toward a cleaner electricity system. With offshore wind development gaining momentum alongside strong onshore installations, Europe’s wind sector is expected to remain a key driver of renewable energy growth.
