Europe’s Solar Resource Was 5% Above Average in August — Is the Grid Ready for More PV?

Aug 31
2 min read

Europe’s solar resource remained unusually strong through August 2026, with average solar irradiance 5% above the 2007–2025 norm and nearly three-quarters of the continent recording above-average levels.

According to Solcast, persistent high-pressure systems and clear skies helped extend the strong solar conditions already observed across Europe in June and July.

But the latest data also highlights an important issue for Europe’s increasingly solar-heavy power system:

More solar generation does not automatically mean a more resilient electricity system.

☀️ Europe Has Experienced Three Consecutive Months of Strong Solar Resources

August marked the third consecutive month in which much of western and central Europe experienced elevated solar irradiance.

Some areas saw particularly significant gains.

Southern England recorded irradiance more than 20% above the long-term average, while London’s cumulative global horizontal irradiance reached a record level for this point of the year.

The strong solar conditions were largely driven by persistent high pressure, which reduced cloud formation and produced extended periods of clear skies.

For solar operators, this means potentially stronger generation conditions across large parts of the continent.

But the same weather pattern also created challenges elsewhere in the energy system.

⚠️ Solar Surplus Came Alongside Hydropower and Nuclear Stress

The unusually sunny weather coincided with severe drought conditions across parts of Europe.

Southern England experienced 62 consecutive dry days, breaking the previous record of 51 days.

Meanwhile, critically low water levels on the Rhine and Danube disrupted hydropower and nuclear generation in parts of Europe.

This creates an increasingly important dynamic:

Solar generation rises → conventional generation availability falls → system flexibility becomes more important.

In other words, Europe's renewable transition is not simply about installing more PV capacity.

It is increasingly about coordinating different sources of generation and ensuring the grid can absorb and redistribute renewable electricity.

🔋 The Real Opportunity May Be Flexibility

The late-August weather shift provides another signal.

As the high-pressure system weakened, cooler and cloudier weather moved into western Europe.

Parts of France and Germany saw their earlier irradiance surplus decline, while central and eastern Europe retained stronger solar conditions.

This geographic variability illustrates why storage, grid interconnection and flexible generation are becoming increasingly important as Europe's solar penetration rises.

A region producing excess solar electricity today may face much lower generation tomorrow.

Without sufficient flexibility, the value of additional solar capacity can be increasingly constrained by:

Solar intermittency + transmission bottlenecks + limited storage + changing weather patterns

🔎 What This Means for Europe's PV Market

The key takeaway from August is not simply that Europe received more sunshine.

It is that solar resource variability is becoming a system-level issue.

As Europe continues adding large volumes of utility-scale and distributed PV, the market will increasingly need:

  • 🔋 Battery energy storage systems

  • ⚡ Grid reinforcement and interconnection

  • 🔄 Flexible demand and load management

  • 🌍 Cross-border electricity trading

  • ☀️ Better solar forecasting and asset optimisation

The next stage of Europe's solar expansion will therefore be less about proving that solar can generate electricity.

It will be about making the electricity system capable of absorbing it when solar generation is abundant — and maintaining reliability when conditions change.
