EWEC to seek developers for 1,500 MW solar photovoltaic project in Khazna

Responses to the proposal request are expected in the third quarter.

The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) issued a request for proposals for the development of the 1,500-megawatt (MW) Khazna Solar Photovoltaic project.

In a statement, EWEC said the request is issued for the 19 companies and consortiums who passed the qualification process after the expression of interest stage in September 2023. A total of 27 parties participated in the expression of interest.

The Khazna Solar Project, the fourth utility-scale solar project, could generate electricity for around 160,000 homes and could reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by over 2.4 million metric tonnes annually.

Once operational, it will bring the EWEC’s installed solar capacity to 5.5 GW.

EWEC’s solar capacity could reduce over 8.2 million metric tonnes of CO2 emission annually by 2027.

The project’s developer will enter a long-term power purchase agreement with EWEC.
