According to Enedis, the French grid operator, France installed 1,013MW of new photovoltaic systems in the second quarter of 2024. This marks an increase from 965MW installed in the first quarter. If this expansion rate continues through the latter half of the year, France could achieve a record output in 2024.
In comparison, during the same periods in 2023, France installed 691 MW and 747 MW of photovoltaic capacity in the first and second quarters, respectively. The total newly installed capacity in Q2 2024 included 18 MW for storage and 710 MW for self-consumption. Of the self-consumption capacity, 336 MW was installed in Q1 and 373 MW in Q2. Among these, 605 MW will feed excess electricity into the grid, while 105 MW will not.
The French Ministry for Ecological Transition reported that around 1 GW of new photovoltaic systems were connected to the grid between January and March 2024. For context, France added 984 MW in Q4 2023 and 639 MW in Q1 2023.
For 2023, France installed 3.2 GW of new photovoltaic capacity, compared to 2.68 GW in 2022 and 2.57 GW in 2021. By March 2024, France’s cumulative installed photovoltaic capacity reached 21.1 GW, with about 20.3 GW on the mainland and the remainder in Corsica and overseas territories.
