In a key step for Italy’s energy transition, Ikigai Energy (IE) and Italian energy law specialists Agnoli Giuggioli (AG) have launched GC Storage Services Limited (GCSS), a platform focused on developing large-scale battery storage solutions (BESS). The partnership, alongside Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) through its Flagship Fund CI V, aims to develop a 2.3GW portfolio of utility-scale battery storage projects across Italy.
GCSS merges IE’s expertise in delivering bankable BESS projects, honed in competitive markets like the UK, with AG’s deep knowledge of Italy’s regulatory and market landscapes. This collaboration positions GCSS to play a pivotal role in Italy’s growing energy storage sector.
Roberto Castiglioni, CEO of GCSS, highlighted the value of this partnership: “Our experience in markets like the UK, Spain, and Portugal, paired with AG’s understanding of Italy’s regulatory environment, provides a strong platform to advance this vital energy transition project in Italy.”
The pipeline includes 14 projects across Northern and Southern Italy, with the first set to be ready for construction by late 2025. The projects’ strategic locations will enable optimal grid connections and capitalize on regional market dynamics.
Italy’s renewable energy targets, aiming for 162.7GW of installed capacity by 2035, are driving significant demand for storage solutions. The portfolio will support renewable integration, enhance grid stability, and contribute to decarbonizing the power sector.
Nischal Agarwal from CIP expressed confidence in Italy’s storage market, stating, “This partnership is a great opportunity to expand our battery storage projects and enter Italy’s promising market. The evolving regulatory environment is creating attractive conditions for development.”
Giulio Giuggioli from AG emphasized the importance of local expertise: “Our understanding of Italy’s regulatory processes and site identification near key grid infrastructure has been crucial in creating this high-quality portfolio.”
By combining international expertise with deep local market insights, GCSS is well-positioned to lead Italy’s rapidly evolving energy storage sector.
