A landmark energy transition project: Germany’s largest battery storage park is set to be built near Klostermansfeld in the Mansfeld-Südharz district over the next two years. Energy Minister Prof. Dr. Armin Willingmann performed the groundbreaking ceremony alongside representatives of the investors. BW ESS is constructing a facility spanning approximately 15 hectares, featuring over 1,100 battery containers with a power output of one gigawatt and a capacity of up to 5.7 gigawatt-hours. This capacity is sufficient to supply electricity to around three million households for at least four hours. The local community will also benefit from the project.
Commissioning of the "giga-storage" park is scheduled for the third quarter of 2028. It is designed to absorb surplus wind and solar power and feed it back into the grid when needed. A key advantage is its location at a central grid node of the future "Südostlink" power highway, which will transport wind power from Saxony-Anhalt to southern Germany starting in 2027. By feeding energy in at the extra-high voltage level, the storage facility strengthens not only the power supply for industry and households but also the flexibility of Germany’s transmission grids.
Willingmann stated: "The future of our energy supply lies in renewables. These locally generated energy sources do not need to be shipped through distant straits; instead, they create value right here on the ground. However, since the sun does not always shine and the wind does not blow constantly, high-performance storage options are essential. The battery park in Klostermansfeld stands out as a flagship project—not just in Germany, but across Europe. This is due not only to its enormous capacity but also to its smart integration into the power grid, the landscaping measures for nature conservation and visual screening, and the tangible benefits for local residents. With this project, Saxony-Anhalt is once again setting benchmarks for a robust and affordable energy future."
