German contractor Goldbeck Solar GmbH has cut sod on a new 29-MWp solar farm development in the Castile and Leon region of Spain, the firm announced on Wednesday as it marked the start of construction of its largest project in the country to date.

The project, called Zaratan, is owned by German wind and solar farm operator Encavis AG (ETR:ECV). Goldbeck Solar said it had been hired by Encavis to deliver the plant under a turnkey contract.

The Zaratan site spans 60 hectares (148.3 acres) located in the municipality of Valladolid, which gets seven to eight hours of sunshine on average per day, according to Goldbeck Solar. The space will be used to install 45,450 solar modules and five inverters.

The contractor plans to commission Zaratan in May 2025. Once in operation, the solar farm will be capable of generating around 55 GWh of electricity annually, or enough to supply over 18,000 households.
