Greece has expanded its wind energy portfolio to a total installed capacity of 5,507 megawatts (MW), according to the Hellenic Scientific Association of Wind Energy (ELETAEN). This milestone comes after the country connected 152.2 MWÂ of new wind projects to the national grid during the first half of 2025.
A total of 37 new wind turbines were brought online in the first six months of the year, representing a 2.8% increase compared to end-2024. The total investment for these installations is estimated at EUR 180 million (USD 210 million).
Although this growth rate is twice as high as the previous year’s, ELETAEN cautioned that current progress remains insufficient to establish a balanced mix within the nation’s broader renewable energy strategy.
In terms of regional distribution, Central Greece leads with 2,427 MW, accounting for 44% of the country's total wind capacity. Peloponnese follows with 709 MW (13%), and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace ranks third with 535 MW (9.7%).
Among private developers, Terna Energy SA—majority-owned by UAE-based renewable energy giant Masdar—is the largest wind farm operator in the country, with a fleet totaling 1,034 MW.
As of the end of June, Greece had over 1 GWÂ of wind projects either under construction or contractually secured, most of which are expected to become operational within the next 18 months. Additionally, 300 MWÂ of new projects were recently awarded through competitive tenders.
