Grenergy launches auction for 960 GWh of battery storage supply in Chile

Spanish renewable energy company Grenergy has launched a reverse auction to contract 1.5 TWh of annual renewable electricity supply in Chile through its subsidiary GR Power. The offering includes 960 GWh per year of battery-stored electricity for nighttime delivery and 540 GWh per year of solar generation for daytime supply, with deliveries scheduled to begin between the second and third quarters of 2028.

The auction targets generators, electricity retailers and large energy consumers seeking long-term power supply agreements backed by Grenergy’s solar and battery storage assets.

Participants may bid for blocks of 20 GWh and choose contract terms of six, eight, 10, 12 or 15 years. The auction will remain open until July 22 following a consultation period that ended on July 7, with registration managed through the Match Energía trading platform.

Grenergy said this is the third renewable energy auction it has organized directly. The company said it became the first clean energy producer in Latin America to use the reverse auction model in 2022 to expand access to long-term renewable power contracts.

Electricity will be supplied from Grenergy’s solar plants and battery energy storage systems in northern and central Chile. The company said its Oasis Atacama platform in the Atacama Desert already includes 2.5 GW of solar capacity and 14 GWh of battery storage, while the Oasis Central project under development in central Chile will add 1.4 GW of solar generation and 5.1 GWh of battery storage.

Grenergy said it intends to replicate the hybrid solar-plus-storage model in other international markets, particularly in Europe.

The company said its global development portfolio includes 71 GWh of battery storage and 12 GW of solar projects.
