Spanish energy company Iberdrola España, a subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group, has inaugurated the largest battery energy storage project currently operating in Spain, marking another major milestone in the company’s strategy to integrate renewable energy, strengthen grid flexibility and accelerate the country’s energy transition.
Located at the Campo Arañuelo solar complex in Cáceres, Extremadura, the new facility combines large-scale solar generation with advanced battery energy storage technology, demonstrating the increasing importance of storage solutions in supporting renewable power deployment.

The project features a battery system with 58 MW of power capacity and 120 MWh of storage capacity, making it Spain’s largest operational battery storage installation. The facility represents a further step in Iberdrola’s long-term commitment to energy storage as a key component of electrification and renewable energy integration.
The storage system consists of two lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery installations, each with approximately 60 MWh of capacity, connected directly to the Campo Arañuelo I and Campo Arañuelo II solar plants.
By storing excess renewable electricity generated during periods of high solar production and releasing power when electricity demand reaches peak levels, the batteries will help improve renewable energy utilization, enhance grid stability and support the integration of additional electrification-driven electricity demand.
The project highlights the growing role of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in addressing one of the key challenges associated with renewable energy expansion: the variability of solar and wind generation. By providing greater flexibility between electricity generation and consumption, large-scale storage enables renewable power to play a more reliable role in future energy systems.
For Iberdrola, the commissioning of the Campo Arañuelo battery project further strengthens its position as one of Spain’s leading energy storage developers. The company already operates approximately 200 MW of battery storage capacity in Spain, reflecting its continued investment in storage technologies as an essential complement to renewable generation.
Iberdrola considers energy storage a critical element in building a more flexible, resilient and sustainable electricity system. Through the deployment of battery storage alongside renewable energy projects, the company aims to improve grid performance and support increasing electricity demand driven by electrification across sectors.
The Campo Arañuelo project also reflects Spain’s broader transition toward a renewable-based energy system, where hybrid solar-plus-storage projects are expected to become increasingly important in maximizing clean energy generation and reducing dependence on conventional power sources.
As renewable energy penetration continues to grow across Europe, large-scale BESS projects such as Iberdrola’s latest development will play a crucial role in balancing electricity networks, improving energy security and enabling deeper integration of renewable generation.
