Chile’s largest solar power plant, CEME 1, has been inaugurated in a ceremony attended by national authorities and key energy sector stakeholders. The 480 MW solar plant, constructed and operated by Generadora Metropolitana—a joint venture between EDF and the Chilean company AME—marks a significant milestone in the country’s renewable energy landscape.
Situated seven kilometers from Maria Elena in the heart of the Atacama Desert, CEME 1 boasts 882,000 high-tech solar panels spread across 435 hectares. This expansive facility will generate enough energy to power 500,000 households while preventing the emission of 280,000 tons of CO2 annually.
CEME 1 features several innovative elements to enhance its efficiency and sustainability. Its design includes a fixed structure with modules oriented to the east and west, maximizing solar energy capture throughout the day. Additionally, the plant employs robotic panel cleaning technology, reducing water consumption by up to 90%.
Generadora Metropolitana is also developing a 1,200 MWh battery project to store the energy produced by CEME 1. This initiative will boost the plant’s efficiency and ensure a more consistent and reliable supply of renewable energy to Chile’s energy system.
Béatrice Buffon, EDF Group Senior Executive Vice-President in charge of the International Division and Chairman of EDF Renewables, commented, “EDF is proud to contribute to Chile’s energy transition with this landmark solar plant. CEME 1 is a key asset of the hybrid thermal and renewable platform we are developing in the country.
The inauguration of CEME 1 is a milestone not only for Chile but also for EDF, given its size and the innovations implemented in its construction. This project strengthens our position in Chile as we continue towards a carbon-neutral and sustainable future.”
EDF Group is already well established in Chile, particularly in the renewable sector, with an installed capacity of 770 MW.
