Indonesia is advancing its supergrid project to balance renewable energy supply and demand. This initiative will integrate renewable sources across islands, enhancing system reliability, expanding the renewable energy mix, and improving cost efficiency.
The supergrid plan includes intra-island upgrades in Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi, and inter-island connections linking Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. Key components include a 1680 km transmission line between Sumatra and Java, with an investment of $4.28 billion, and projects in Kalimantan and Sulawesi, each requiring $1.8 billion.
Jisman, a project leader, emphasized that the supergrid will help achieve Indonesia’s goal of increasing the renewable energy share from 20% in 2024 to 82% by 2060. He also stressed the need for alternative financing and private sector involvement to fully realize the project’s benefits.
