Indonesia's Prabowo launches 14 solar power projects

JAKARTA, August 25, 2026 — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has inaugurated 14 solar power projects with a combined capacity of 5.3 gigawatts (GW), as the country accelerates renewable energy deployment and works to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.
The projects form part of Indonesia’s ambitious plan to add 100GW of new solar capacity between 2026 and 2029.
According to senior Energy Ministry official Eniya Listiani Dewi, the 14 projects represent an estimated total investment of 135 trillion rupiah (US$7.62 billion).
Six Projects Under Construction
Of the 14 solar projects, two are already operational, while six are currently under construction. The remaining six projects are expected to be offered to investors.
The government's broader target of developing 100GW of solar power between 2026 and 2029 is estimated to require approximately 1,140 trillion rupiah in investment.
The scale of the planned investment highlights the significant financing opportunities that Indonesia's solar expansion could create for international investors, developers, equipment manufacturers and renewable energy companies.
Solar Expansion Could Cut Electricity Costs
The planned solar projects are also expected to deliver significant economic benefits by reducing electricity generation costs.
According to the Energy Ministry, the solar farms could reduce electricity costs by approximately 73.9 trillion rupiah annually through lower generation costs.
The government is also targeting the retirement of around 13GW of diesel-fired power generation, replacing it with renewable energy as part of efforts to reduce fossil-fuel dependence.
Solar Growth Could Drive Energy Storage Demand
Indonesia's rapid expansion of solar capacity is expected to create additional demand for battery energy storage systems (BESS) and other grid-flexibility solutions.
As solar generation increases, energy storage could help manage fluctuations in renewable output, shift excess daytime electricity to periods of higher demand and support the replacement of diesel generation in remote areas.
The combination of solar power, battery storage and grid investment could therefore become an important component of Indonesia's broader energy transition.
Investment Opportunities Expand
Indonesia's 100GW solar target represents one of the largest renewable energy expansion ambitions in Southeast Asia.
With approximately 1,140 trillion rupiah of investment required through 2029, the programme could create opportunities across the solar supply chain, including project development, financing, EPC services, solar equipment, battery storage, grid infrastructure and operations and maintenance.
The government's focus on replacing diesel generation could also accelerate the deployment of solar-plus-storage projects, particularly in regions where conventional fuel-based electricity remains expensive.
