Insights from Ibrahim Mazen on LONGi Solar’s Hi-MO 9 and Future Innovations in KSA

We are thrilled to share an insightful Q&A session with Ibrahim Mazen, the Country Manager at LONGi Solar. Ibrahim plays a crucial role in overseeing utility solar projects throughout Saudi Arabia, providing exceptional technical assistance and consultations. With his extensive expertise and dedication to the solar industry, Ibrahim is driving the adoption of renewable energy solutions in the region. In this interview, we explore key topics related to solar technology and its impact on Saudi Arabia’s energy landscape, as we work towards a more sustainable future for the region.

1. How will the Hi-MO 9 module impact the solar energy landscape in Saudi Arabia with its advantages for the region’s unique environmental conditions?

The new Hi-MO 9 is based on the 2nd generation N-type Hybrid Passivated Back Contact (HPBC) solar cell technology and the advanced TaiRay wafer, with capabilities of reaching power output up to 660W. It boasts a module conversion efficiency of up to 24.43%, compared to the market standard of 23.3%. Built to excel in a range of tough environments, including lakes, mountains, and deserts, its high efficiency and performance in high temperatures make it an excellent choice for large solar projects in the region.

2. What strategies does LONGi employ to maintain cost-effectiveness while leveraging the advanced technology of the Hi-MO 9 Panel for large-scale solar projects in Saudi Arabia?

Our new Hi-MO 9 module is based on the standard size of 2382×1134, which has been widely accepted in the industry. This provides LONGi with better module reliability and performance. Additionally, it has a lower degradation value than the standard Topcon, resulting in higher energy generation throughout the project’s lifespan. Power plant owners can rest assured that a plant built with the Hi-MO 9 module will make the most efficient use of land and maximize the value from sunlight.

3. What impact will the introduction of HPBC (Hybrid Passivated Back Contact) solar cells have on the future of solar technology?

HPBC cells have the highest theoretical efficiency of around 29.1%, surpassing all other silicon-based technologies. LONGi currently holds the world record for cell efficiency of silicon heterojunction back-contact (HBC) solar cells at 27.30% under laboratory conditions. HPBC solar cells will improve efficiency and power output within the same size constraints, helping to make solar energy more affordable and accessible.

4. How do LONGi’s world record achievements in solar cell efficiency align with its sustainability goals and Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030?

Our world record achievements have firmly established LONGi as a leader in crystalline silicon photovoltaics. The company now holds twin world records for efficiency in crystalline silicon solar cells and crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells. In November 2023, LONGi set an additional world record for the efficiency of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells at 33.9%. Through such innovations and advancements in technology, LONGi aims to contribute to the Middle East’s energy transition and KSA’s Vision 2030 goal of achieving 50% renewable energy by 2030.

5. As a Country Manager, what future trends or innovations in solar technology are you most excited about for Saudi Arabia’s energy sector?

LONGi believes that Green Power + Green Hydrogen solutions will empower KSA’s energy future by achieving zero carbon and national energy goals. KSA’s vast desert expanses provide an easily deployable environment for solar plants, with the geographic advantage of meeting domestic energy needs and exporting surplus power to neighboring countries. KSA’s commitment to clean energy transformation is evident in its ambitious national goals, and LONGi is determined to contribute to this transformation.
