Iraq is making significant strides in expanding its solar energy capacity with three major projects totaling 1.7 GW already in progress. Additionally, the government has launched a new initiative to install solar systems on public buildings and promote solar adoption among households.
This development was announced by Electricity Minister Ziad Ali Fadhil at a recent conference, where he also unveiled a digital platform to qualify companies that specialize in solar energy system installations.
Minister Fadhil explained that citizens will have the option to purchase solar systems from licensed vendors, either through direct payment or with the help of an interest-free loan provided by the Central Bank of Iraq.
In further detailing the government’s solar plans, Fadhil revealed agreements for three large-scale solar projects with a combined capacity of 1,700 MW, to be developed in Karbala, Muthanna, and Basra. A ministry spokesperson added that these projects will be implemented in phases and are expected to be completed within the next two to three years.
Beyond household adoption, the government has selected 546 government buildings to be outfitted with solar systems, as part of its efforts to boost the nation’s renewable energy infrastructure.
Fadhil also commended the National Initiative to Support Energy and Reduce Emissions, which has been instrumental in shaping Iraq’s clean energy policies and pushing forward sustainable energy efforts in recent years.
