Japanese utility Electric Power Development Co Ltd, known as J-Power, has signed a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with Tokyo Metro Co Ltd, a leading mass rapid transit (MRT) operator.
The agreement, facilitated by J-Power’s wholly owned subsidiary J-Solar Co Ltd, is linked to the 1.99-MW Himeji Oshio Solar Power Station, currently under construction.
According to J-Power, the solar facility is projected to produce around 3.9 million kWh of renewable energy annually. Through the 20-year VPPA, Tokyo Metro will receive the environmental benefits of this offsite solar generation, helping offset approximately 1,521 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year, as detailed in the company’s statement.
