Japanese utility JERA Co Inc has officially launched the supply of solar power to six business processing outsourcing (BPO) sites operated by Prestige International Inc (PI).
This marks the beginning of a new phase in renewable energy integration for the company, with JERA’s subsidiary, JERA Cross Inc, delivering electricity under an off-site solar power purchase agreement (PPA).
The solar energy is sourced from plants located in the Tohoku and Chubu regions of Japan, with five of the six PI BPO sites located in the Tohoku area and one in the Hokuriku area. As part of this initiative, approximately 30% of the electricity used in the Tohoku region will now be generated by solar power. The remainder will be sourced from a solar plant in Chubu or purchased from the broader Japanese energy market.
JERA plans to gradually provide 24/7 carbon-free electricity to all of PI’s BPO locations. The first phase of this solar power supply began on June 1, 2024, at PI’s Iwate BPO Fortress site. This collaboration is a significant step in Japan's ongoing shift towards renewable energy solutions in the corporate sector.
