Jordan’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, and Director of Public Security, Major General Obaidallah Maaytah, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to deliver electricity to remote Public Security Department (PSD) sites using off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.
The MoU outlines the design, supply, installation, operation, and maintenance of nine off-grid solar PV systems across five PSD sites. This initiative aims to enhance service delivery in areas not connected to the national electricity grid, which is in line with recent decisions of the Council of Ministers. These decisions include exempting PSD sites from standard rural electrification costs, with the project funded at a total of 770,000 Jordanian dinars from the rural fils account. Additional costs exceeding this amount will be covered by the Public Security Department.
Dr. Al-Kharabsheh emphasized that the project represents a collaborative effort to improve services to security directorates in remote areas. He highlighted the commitment to using solar energy to enhance service delivery and operational efficiency in underserved regions.
Major General Maaytah expressed his appreciation for the MoU, noting that it reflects the successful collaboration between the Public Security Department and the Ministry of Energy. He stressed that the project aims to provide better security services across Jordan and commended the ongoing partnership, which aligns with directives from King Abdullah II.
Engineer Hisham Al-Momani, Director of the Electricity and Rural Electrification Directorate at the Ministry of Energy, outlined that the project will involve bidding through the Special Tenders Committee, as per the Cabinet’s decision. The procurement process will also include exemptions from customs duties and a zero-rate general sales tax for project-related goods.
The installation of these solar PV systems is expected to significantly improve the efficiency and reliability of energy supply for Jordan’s Public Security units in remote locations.
