Energy Box

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has inaugurated a Green Hydrogen Plant at its AM Naik Heavy Engineering Complex in Hazira, Gujarat.

Mr. Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman of Indian Oil Corporation Limited, inaugurated the plant. Today marks the beginning of Green Hydrogen production via an alkaline electrolysis process. The plant will generate 45 kg of green hydrogen per day, which will be consumed exclusively by the Hazira manufacturing complex.

The Green Hydrogen Plant is intended to have an electrolyser capacity of 800 kW, with Alkaline (380 kW) and PEM (420 kW) technologies, and will be powered by a rooftop solar plant with a 990kW peak DC capacity and a 500kWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The 380 kW Alkaline electrolyser has been installed as part of the first phase of the project, while the 420 kW PEM electrolyser and solar plant capacity extension to 1.6 MW peak DC will be installed as part of future development.

Commenting on the occasion, Mr. Subramanian Sarma, Whole-time Director & Senior Executive Vice President (Energy), L&T said: “L&T is at the forefront of providing innovative and sustainable solutions that will help meet the energy needs of the future. We are proud that our engineers have set up the Green Hydrogen generation plant at Hazira complex and integrated it with the existing manufacturing shops for use of the green hydrogen.”

He added that “This initiative is in line with L&T’s climate leadership targets of Lakshya-2026 that will help reduce greenhouse gases footprint for us as well as our clients by approximately 300 tons/annum. We believe that Green Hydrogen is a promising alternative fuel, and this plant is a testimony that we are committed to creating a greener tomorrow.”

The first part of the project has been erected, tested, and commissioned, and the plant’s footprint is 3000 square meters. Scope includes the production of Green Hydrogen of high purity (99.99%) and Oxygen for captive use in manufacturing facilities. As a fuel, a mixture of 15% Hydrogen and Natural Gas will be utilized, and oxygen will be added to cutting and welding operations.

To ensure safe operation and production, the architecture of the facility combines both active and passive safety features, and it will be run by cutting-edge control systems with remote monitoring capabilities. In addition, L&T will design an integrated data analytics platform that will provide insight into the functioning of the electrolysers and the entire facility.

L&T has vowed to achieve water neutrality by 2035 and carbon neutrality by 2040 as part of its ESG obligations. Integrating Green Hydrogen into its clean fuel adoption policy.

The climate change, energy efficiency, and renewable energy initiatives of L&T are in line with India’s National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC). In addition, the company’s programs are being linked with the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) adopted by the Indian government during the COP 21 – Paris Agreement.
