Lightsource bp, a global leader in solar energy development, has announced progress on its Guillena portfolio, a large-scale solar project located across the municipalities of Guillena, Burguillos, and Alcalá del Río in Seville, Spain.
The portfolio includes five solar plants with a combined installed capacity of 248 MWp, marking a major milestone in the region’s renewable energy expansion.
Key environmental measures include conducting a comprehensive one-year birdlife study to strategically site the plants, ensuring minimal disruption to endangered species' breeding seasons. Native shrubs will be planted around the perimeter to preserve the landscape and allow animal passage, while bird protection devices will be installed on power lines to prevent collisions.
Additionally, agreements with local landowners will support dryland crop management to improve steppe bird habitats, and efforts to renaturalize areas within the plants will enhance biodiversity and protect the soil.
Once operational, the solar plants will produce over 515,000 MWh of clean energy annually—enough to power 132,000 households. The project is set to create 350 direct jobs and generate €8 million in local tax revenue within its first year, contributing significantly to both the energy transition and the local economy.
