Luminus Files Papers for 100MW Battery Project in Belgium

Belgian energy company Luminus has submitted a permit application for a 100-MW/400-MWh battery storage project in the Ghent Canal area of northwestern Belgium.

The facility will be built in response to the growing need for flexibility and stability services to the grid, Luminus said on Friday.

To be installed at the site of the Ringvaart gas-fired power station, the battery energy storage system will be connected to the network of Belgian electricity transmission operator Elia. Its commissioning is scheduled to take place by the end of 2026. The facility’s stored power will be enough to cover the electricity consumption of about 42,000 homes on a daily basis.

The battery project will replace a plan for the expansion of the Ringvaart site by adding more open-cycle gas turbines. Luminus said it intends to keep the existing power station in operation.

“With our battery parks, here in Ringvaart and also in Lixhe in Wallonia, we want to bring the necessary flexibility to the electricity grid and enable increased growth in renewable energies,” said Gregoire Dallemagne, CEO of Luminus.
