Malaysia | Rising Power Demand Puts Grid Flexibility in Focus
Malaysia's electricity demand is expected to continue rising, driven by data centres, population growth and increasing cooling demand amid hotter weather.
According to CIMB Securities, peak electricity demand could reach 33.5 GW by 2035, up from 21.3 GW in 2026, while data centres could account for 31% of Peninsular Malaysia's electricity demand.

At the same time, Malaysia is targeting 40% renewable energy capacity by 2035 and 70% by 2050.
The key challenge is therefore not simply adding more generation capacity, but ensuring the grid can connect, balance and reliably deliver that capacity.
With LSS Petra 5+ expected to add almost 2 GW of large-scale solar and mobilise around RM6 billion in investment, technologies such as BESS, energy efficiency and demand-side management will become increasingly important to support Malaysia's energy transition.
Rising electricity demand + rapid renewable deployment = growing demand for grid flexibility.
