Manila Water Powers Up with 4.27 MW Solar Installation

Manila Water Co., Inc. has partnered with MSpectrum, Inc., MERALCO’s solar energy subsidiary, to install 4.27 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar power systems across its facilities.

In a report by Business World, Manila Water announced the signing of a power purchase agreement with MSpectrum for the Phase 2 solar project, which will cover 10 facilities.

Construction is set to begin in the first quarter of 2025, with the facilities expected to generate 6.2 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually upon completion. This output is equivalent to the energy consumption of 2,600 households.

Manila Water President and CEO Jose Victor Emmanuel A. de Dios said the decision to adopt solar energy stems from both environmental and operational considerations, noting that energy is a significant portion of their expenses.

Earlier this year, the company initiated Phase 1 of its solar project, installing systems at the Cardona Treatment Plant, East La Mesa Treatment Plant, and San Juan Compound.

The first phase, with a total capacity of 2.5 MWp, is projected to generate 3.6 million kWh per year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2,564 tons of CO2 equivalent annually.

Manila Water emphasized that these solar facilities will not only decrease grid dependency but also contribute to sustainability goals by cutting carbon emissions.

MSpectrum specializes in customized solar energy solutions for industrial, commercial, and residential users, leveraging insights into energy consumption patterns and partnerships with leading technology providers.

Meanwhile, Manila Water serves Metro Manila’s east zone, including areas in Marikina, Pasig, Makati, Taguig, Pateros, Mandaluyong, San Juan, parts of Quezon City and Manila, as well as several towns in Rizal province.
