Abu Dhabi—In a landmark move towards renewable energy expansion, Masdar has entered into a Joint Study Agreement with Malaysia’s Sarawak Energy and Gentari to evaluate the feasibility of a floating solar power plant at the Murum Hydroelectric Plant reservoir in Sarawak, Malaysia. The project is set to play a crucial role in advancing Malaysia’s clean energy goals and supporting Sarawak’s ambitions to lead sustainable energy development in Southeast Asia.

The official signing ceremony took place at Masdar’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi, with Masdar’s CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Sarawak Energy Group CEO Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, and Gentari CEO Sushil Purohit representing their organizations. The event was honored by the presence of the Right Honorable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Abang Haji Openg, Premier of Sarawak, who witnessed the exchange of documents.

This initiative is part of Malaysia’s broader renewable energy targets, aiming to achieve 31% renewable capacity in its power generation mix by 2025 and reach 40% by 2035. Sarawak, in particular, is committed to positioning itself as a leader in clean energy development and export within the Southeast Asian region. Through an implementation roadmap established in partnership with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority, Masdar is actively exploring collaborations to drive up to 10 GW of clean energy projects in Malaysia.

This joint study marks a significant step forward in the global energy transition, strengthening ties between the UAE and Malaysia in their shared vision for a sustainable future.
