NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL) and Opera Energy Private Limited Secure Battery Energy Storage Projects in Kerala

NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL) and Opera Energy Private Limited have emerged as the successful bidders in NHPC Limited’s recent tender for standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Kerala. The tender called for a total capacity of 125 MW/500 MWh, aimed at strengthening the state's transmission network and addressing grid demand fluctuations, with viability gap funding support.
NGEL secured the highest capacity allocation, winning a total of 80 MW/320 MWh through two separate projects:
A 40 MW/160 MWh system at the Pothencode substation, awarded at a tariff of INR 457,000 per MW per month
Another 40 MW/160 MWh system at the Sreekantapuram substation, awarded at INR 434,000 per MW per month
Additionally, Opera Energy won a 15 MW/60 MWh project at a tariff of INR 438,000 per MW per month.
These BESS installations are designed to enhance grid stability and manage peak demand fluctuations, supporting Kerala’s ongoing clean energy transition efforts.
