Origin Energy buys renewable energy developer Walcha Energy

It will also own Walcha’s proposed Salisbury Solar Farm and Ruby Hills Wind Farm.

Australia’s Origin Energy acquired renewable energy developer Walcha Energy and its proposed wind and solar farms with a project capacity of over 1,300 megawatts (MW).

In a statement, Origin Head of Energy Supply and Operations Greg Jarvis said the acquisition is in line with its energy transition goals and its priority to ramp up its renewables and storage portfolio.

“Through Walcha and the earlier acquisition of the ‘Warrane’ property, Origin’s portfolio now includes several projects with promising wind and solar resources within the New England REZ (Renewable Energy Zone), close to recently published transmission line investigation routes,” Jarvis said.

Walcha Energy’s proposed Salisbury Solar Farm is located around 10 kilometres south of Uralla, whilst the proposed Ruby Hills Wind Farm is 10 km west of Walcha, in the southern part of the New England REZ.

Origin acquired the “Warrane” property in July 2023, located within the central part of the New England REZ where the Northern Tableland Wind Farm will be built.
