Peak Energy to build 4 GWh grid-scale sodium-ion BESS factory in California

eak Energy’s 183,000 square foot facility in Sacramento, California, will be capable of producing up to 4 GWh of sodium-ion batteries annually.

It will cost around $71 million. The company, which is partially headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area, said the investment will create hundreds of jobs and stimulate the local economy.

Peak Energy has secured more than 6 GWh of customer commitments to 2030, and it expects to enter production and begin shipments in the first quarter of 2027. The fast-growing company only completed its Series A funding round in 2024.

“America needs energy storage that is lower cost, more affordable, more reliable and purpose-built to meet the demand coming onto the grid,” said Landon Mossburg, CEO of Peak Energy. “This facility is proof that America can lead not only in inventing the technology, but in building it at scale. With our manufacturing facility in Sacramento, we’re enabling American energy innovation to lower electric bills while creating high quality jobs.”

The team has spent the past few months making high-profile deals with other companies to scale its sodium-ion energy storage technology. The factory will help realize these commitments and increase deployment of its sodium-ion systems for high-demand sectors in the United States, like data centers and industrial manufacturing.

The startup has already announced the successful deployment and operation of its first grid-scale sodium-ion system in Watkins, Colorado. At 3.5 MWh of storage capacity, the system is one of the country’s biggest sodium-ion batteries.

In March 2026, the company revealed plans to deploy a sodium-ion battery with RWE Americas in Eastern Wisconson.

Peak Energy also has an agreement with Jupiter Power to deliver approximately 4.75 GWh of storage between 2027 and 2030, and a 1.5 GWh deal with Energy Vault to incorporate its sodium-ion technology into an energy storage platform for AI data centers.

In June, Peak Energy signed a partnership with GM Ventures, the investment arm of General Motors to combine GM’s sodium-ion cell technology with its proprietary energy storage platform.

In an interview with ESS News in July 2025, Peak Energy CCO and President Cameron Dales said the company’s system costs less to operate and is more durable and reliable compared to lithium-ion phosphate batteries.

The Sacramento site was chosen following a nationwide site selection process. Peak Energy was awarded a $10.5 million Californian tax credit in May to aid its local expansion in Sacramento and following the factory announcement, local government representatives hailed the investment.

“The future of energy is being built in California,” said Dee Dee Myers, Senior Advisor to Governor Newsom and Director of the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz).

“Peak Energy’s decision to select Sacramento is exactly the kind of advanced manufacturing investment that reflects the strengths of our region,” said Barry Broome, President and CEO of the Greater Sacramento Economic Council. “Sacramento has become a destination for innovative companies looking to grow, manufacture and invest for the long term. This project will create opportunities for our local businesses, working families and communities while ensuring the benefits of California’s energy transformation are felt right here in Sacramento for generations to come.”
