Portugal eyes for 10GW offshore wind farm tender next year

Portugal is all set to increase the capacity of its inaugural offshore wind farm tender next year to 10GW.

This was announced by the country’s environment minister Duarte Cordeiro. He informed about this new target during a parliamentary committee hearing.

Earlier, the minister Cordeiro had committed to tender 6-8GW of projects in June. This would double the government’s target at the start of 2022.

The latest move comes at a time when Portugal has increased its ambition owing to the current growing energy crisis. This is followed by crisis across Europe due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

According to the Minister, “Portugal now intends to move faster on its energy transition, adding that technical details of the offshore wind tender and the final list of coastal locations are still being prepared,” a report mentioned.
