Public Opinion in Scotland Shifts Strongly Toward Renewables for Long-Term Energy Needs

A growing majority of people in Scotland are backing renewable energy as the cornerstone of the country’s long-term energy strategy, according to recent polling, signaling a clear shift in public sentiment toward cleaner and more secure energy systems.

The survey shows that over half of respondents believe renewable energy sources—including wind, solar, and hydropower—are best positioned to meet future energy demand. In contrast, significantly fewer participants expressed support for continued reliance on fossil fuels such as oil and gas, while nuclear energy received comparatively limited backing.

Beyond long-term supply considerations, renewables are also increasingly viewed as a solution to immediate economic concerns. Nearly half of those surveyed identified renewable energy as the most effective pathway to reducing household energy bills, underscoring the growing perception that clean energy can deliver both affordability and stability.

Trust in the energy sector is also shifting. Renewable energy developers were rated substantially higher in public trust compared to traditional oil and gas companies and nuclear operators, reflecting broader changes in how energy providers are perceived in the context of climate responsibility and transparency.

The findings come at a critical time as policymakers and industry stakeholders across the UK and Europe continue to debate the balance between energy security, affordability, and decarbonization. With public opinion increasingly aligned behind renewables, the results may add further momentum to investment and policy support for clean energy infrastructure.

Industry observers note that the transition toward renewables is no longer driven solely by environmental concerns. Instead, it is increasingly underpinned by a combination of economic, geopolitical, and energy security factors—marking a more mature phase of the global energy transition.

As countries accelerate efforts to build resilient and low-carbon energy systems, Scotland’s public sentiment reflects a broader global trend: renewable energy is becoming the preferred foundation for future energy strategies.
