PV Solar Power Achieves Milestone in Brazil

Brazil's PV solar power and energy cogeneration segments have achieved a rapid progress, according to Absolar.

It stated that installed capacity of solar energy has surpassed that of natural gas and biomass-fired thermal plants.

Now, solar energy has become the third largest source in the national electricity matrix. Hydro and wind power are still the leading sources in Brazil.

Absolar informed that there are 16.4GW of solar energy in large plants and small self-generation projects. In a decade, solar has avoided the emission of 23.6Mt of CO2 in electricity generation.

“Large-scale solar plants generate electricity at prices up to 10 times lower than emergency fossil thermoelectric plants or electricity imported from neighboring countries, two of the main culprits for the rising consumer rates,” Absolar director Carlos Dornellas was quoted in a statement.

In terms of cogeneration, projects in commercial operation have surpassed the 20GW mark, according to a study by industry association Cogen. There are 646 cogeneration plants in the country.

The association has projected 807MW to start commercial operation this year.
