Renewable is likely to contribute around 52% to Malaysia’s power generation mix by 2050.
According to a report by a local think tank Ember, the remaining 48% power will be driven by gas.
It comes at a time when the Malaysian government is planning to increase its renewable energy targets to diversify the energy mix. The government plans to achieve 70% renewable capacity by 2050 as per the country’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).
Out of the overall renewables, solar power tops the list due to abundant solar resources, while gas serves as a transitional fuel away from coal, a local report mentioned.
The country aims to harness solar which could enhance both affordability and security in the overall power sector. There is also a priority set for energy storage technologies like battery energy storage systems (BESS).
A local report mentioned, “Policies promoting solar growth and BESS adoption across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak are deemed crucial to support this transition.”
